Fall is different. Poa annua, henbit, and chickweed are winter annuals — they germinate as soil cools, not as it warms. Product Choice: Prodiamine Is the Standard
Prodiamine is the default active ingredient for fall Poa annua control: it has a long residual (typically season-long control from one application), it’s well-tolerated by most cool- and warm-season turf, and it’s the most-studied option for annual bluegrass prevention in university turf trials.
Dithiopyr is the other common choice. It works similarly but retains some early post-emergence activity, meaning it can still control Poa annua that has just barely germinated when you apply. If you’re not certain whether germination has started — say you’re applying a little later than planned — dithiopyr gives you a margin of safety prodiamine doesn’t.
Both are true pre-emergents: once weeds are past the earliest germination stage, neither will clean up an established stand. That’s a job for a post-emergent, not a fall pre-emergent application.
The Overseeding Conflict

It’s not a full substitute for a standard Poa annua program, but it’s the standard workaround when overseeding and weed prevention both need to happen in the same window.

A split-application approach addresses this:

- Second application: roughly 6–8 weeks later, often at a reduced rate, to extend the barrier through the tail end of the germination window.
This is standard practice on warm-season turf and long-season transition zone lawns. Always check your product’s label for split-application rates and minimum intervals — some formulations have specific sequential-application guidance, and exceeding seasonal active ingredient limits can cause turf injury.
Common Mistakes
Applying too early because September is hot. A warm September doesn’t mean soil has cooled. Air temperature is a poor proxy for soil temperature at 2 inches — soil lags behind air swings by days to weeks. Applying on a calendar date or after one cool front, rather than on sustained soil data, is the most common way homeowners waste a fall application: the product breaks down before Poa annua actually germinates weeks later.
Skipping the watering-in step. Pre-emergent herbicides need to move into the top layer of soil to form their barrier. If rain isn’t forecast within a day or two, water the treated area with a quarter to half inch of irrigation. Product left sitting on dry thatch can break down under UV or get tracked off-target before it’s incorporated, cutting effectiveness significantly.
