How GDD Predicts Grub Activity

Growing Degree Days (GDD) track accumulated warmth from air-temperature observations since January 1. This tracker uses 1,000–1,300 GDD as a broad preventive timing window, based on northern Japanese beetle timing. It does not observe beetles, eggs or grubs in your lawn. In Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas, ZIP results show published university Extension timing instead, with GDD for reference; where we have not found an Extension source that gives a month, the result says so rather than guessing. Product-specific timing and local Extension guidance take precedence.

Why Grub Control Timing Matters

Preventive products such as chlorantraniliprole need time to reach the root zone before young grubs cause damage. Prevention may be warranted after a relevant prior infestation; many lawns need no pesticide. Rescue is a separate decision for confirmed active grub damage. Larger grubs can be harder to control, and treatment may be ineffective once feeding stops. Check the exact label and local guidance.
