Signs of Grub Damage in Your Lawn (and How to Confirm It)
Three signs point to grubs almost every time: irregular brown patches that peel back like a loose carpet because the roots underneath have been chewed off, turf that feels spongy or soft underfoot even though it hasn’t rained, and digging from skunks, raccoons, or birds tearing up the sod to get at the grubs living just below the surface.
Any one of those signs is worth investigating. All three together are close to a confirmed diagnosis. Before you spend money on a curative treatment, though, confirm it — drought stress, chinch bugs, and fungal disease all cause brown patches too, and they need completely different fixes.
The Tug Test and Sod-Flap Count
The fastest way to confirm grubs is physical, not visual.
The tug test: Grab a handful of turf at the edge of a brown patch and pull. If the grass lifts away in a loose mat with little to no root resistance — like pulling back a rug — the roots have been severed below the crown. Healthy turf, or turf that’s just drought-stressed, resists the pull because the root system is still intact.
The 1-square-foot sod-flap count: Cut three sides of a 1-foot-square section of turf with a spade, about 2 inches deep, and fold it back like a flap. Once you’re counting, the question is whether the population justifies treatment. The widely used action threshold is 5 to 10 grubs per square foot. The single fastest differentiator is the tug test. If the grass comes up loose with no roots attached, you’re dealing with grubs. If it stays anchored, look at watering, insects, or fungus instead.
Seasonal Timeline: When Grub Damage Actually Shows Up
Grub damage isn’t random — it follows the life cycle of the beetles that produce them (Japanese beetles, June beetles, and other white grub species).
Late summer through fall is when damage is most visible and most severe. Adult beetles lay eggs in early-to-mid summer, and the newly hatched grubs feed aggressively on roots close to the surface before cooling temperatures send them deeper to overwinter. This is the period when brown patches, spongy turf, and animal digging show up fastest, because the young grubs are actively feeding and the turf hasn’t had time to compensate.
Spring damage is real but often misdiagnosed. Grubs that overwintered deep in the soil move back up as it warms and resume feeding briefly before pupating into adult beetles. You may see some patchy thinning or continued digging activity, but by the time you notice it, the grubs are usually near the end of their damaging feeding stage. This matters for treatment: spring applications are the least effective way to deal with grubs, because you’re chasing a population that’s about to stop feeding on its own. Save the curative products for what you find in late summer/fall, and use spring to assess and plan, not to treat.
What to Do at Each Stage
