What Chlorantraniliprole Actually Is
Chlorantraniliprole belongs to a class of insecticides called anthranilic diamides. It works by disrupting the ryanodine receptors in an insect’s muscle cells, causing rapid loss of muscle control and death. Grubs that ingest treated grass roots stop feeding almost immediately, even though full mortality can take longer to appear.
The reason this matters for homeowners: chlorantraniliprole’s mode of action is highly selective for insects with this receptor type. Compared to older neonicotinoid grub killers (imidacloprid, clothianidin), university extension entomologists and EPA reviews consistently note lower toxicity to bees, birds, fish, and earthworms at labeled turf rates. It’s not “safe” in the sense of having zero ecological footprint — no pesticide is — but it’s one of the more favorable options available to homeowners for grub prevention, which is part of why Scotts built GrubEx1 around it and why many university turf programs recommend it as a preferred preventive active ingredient.
Apply by GDD, Not by Month
The GrubEx label and most extension guidance say to apply “in late spring to early summer, before grub eggs hatch.” The problem is that “late spring” doesn’t mean the same thing everywhere, and going by the calendar alone gets homeowners in trouble every year.
Grub prevention works because chlorantraniliprole needs to already be present in the root zone, in sufficient concentration, by the time adult beetles lay eggs and those eggs hatch into small, actively feeding larvae. Miss that window and you’re not preventing anything — you’re just watering an inert product into soil that already has grubs in it.
Egg-laying and hatching are driven by soil temperature and accumulated heat, which is exactly what GDD tracks. A useful rule of thumb we use on this site: treat when your ZIP hits roughly 1,000–1,300 GDD (base 50°F, accumulated from January 1). That’s later in the season than pre-emergent herbicide timing (which targets the 150–200 GDD range for crabgrass), because grub biology runs on a different clock than weed seed germination.
Here’s why regional examples matter so much:
- A Georgia lawn can cross 1,000 GDD by mid-to-late April in many years, sometimes even earlier along the coast. Japanese beetle and other white grub activity in the Southeast starts earlier because the soil warms up earlier.
- A Minnesota lawn often doesn’t reach that same GDD range until mid-June or later. Applying GrubEx in April in Minnesota — following a national “spring application” calendar — wastes product because the insecticide can break down or move past the root zone before grubs are even present to feed on it.

Watering In: Don’t Skip This Step
GrubEx1 does nothing sitting on top of the grass. The label directs watering in with about 0.5 inch of irrigation immediately after application, and this step isn’t optional — it’s how the granules dissolve and carry chlorantraniliprole down through the thatch layer into the root zone where grubs actually feed. Apply the product and skip the irrigation, and you’ve applied a preventive that never made it to where the pest lives.
If rain isn’t in the forecast within a day of application, run sprinklers. A quick way to check you’ve hit roughly half an inch: set a straight-sided can (a tuna can works) on the lawn and water until it collects about 0.5 inch.
What GrubEx Does NOT Do
This is the single most common mistake homeowners make with this product: GrubEx will not kill grubs that are already established and feeding. It’s a preventive, not a rescue treatment. If you’re finding grub damage right now — spongy, dying turf that pulls up like carpet, or skunks and raccoons tearing up your yard hunting for grubs — GrubEx applied today will not fix that problem this season.
For active infestations, pivot to a curative insecticide instead. Products containing trichlorfon (such as Dylox) act fast against grubs that are already feeding and are the standard recommendation from extension services for curative, in-season treatment. Curative applications also need to be watered in, and timing still matters — trichlorfon works best against smaller, younger grubs rather than large, late-instar grubs heading into fall dormancy.
In short: GDD in the 1,000–1,300 range with no visible damage yet → GrubEx1 (preventive, chlorantraniliprole). Visible grub damage already present → trichlorfon-based curative, applied promptly and watered in.
One Application Per Year
Read the GrubEx1 label and you’ll find a one-application-per-year limit for season-long grub prevention. This isn’t a marketing suggestion — it’s the labeled maximum, and it’s also all that’s needed. A correctly timed single application, watered in properly, protects the root zone through the entire egg-hatch and larval feeding period for that season. Applying twice doesn’t add protection; it just adds cost and unnecessary chemical load to your lawn and the surrounding soil. If you missed the window and grubs are already active, that calls for a curative product, not a second preventive application.
